Unity (1918) by Kevin Kerr tells the story of a small Canadian town as its residents confront the devastating flu pandemic that begins to sweep the globe at the end of World War I. In 2020, amidst another global pandemic, a cast of 11 actors and a small crew filmed a performance of this multi-award-winning play in and around the quiet theatre of the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre—over a week, between two lockdowns. The resulting performance film premiered online with a limited run in 2021.

Shot using a single handheld Handycam, the film embraced a bare, minimalist staging. Practical and working lights replaced traditional stage lighting, drawing focus to the acting and storytelling. This creative approach was shaped both by the challenges of producing theatre during a pandemic and by artistic inspirations—including the Dogme 95 movement and films like Dogville. Most scenes were rehearsed and roughly planned before shooting, with many filmed in one take to conserve time and preserve spontaneity.
