A short solo performance featuring Susan Lankester that explores trauma, courage, and the reclamation of one’s story. Inspired by Chanel Miller’s experiences (People v. Turner) and the 7,138-word victim impact statement she read in court, as well as Eh Joe, a teleplay by Samuel Beckett. This piece is part of Don’t Let Joe & Faridah Know, a short play series.
To evoke the intensity of trauma and confrontation, the video design juxtaposed live feeds from up to three cameras with other video footage, most notably a snippet from the 1966 broadcast of Eh Joe. The visuals were layered with a carefully crafted soundscape of ambient sounds, voiceovers drawn from segments of the letter, and moments of silence—alternately oppressive and restrained.
